LED vs. Incandescent Lights

When choosing between LED and incandescent lights for your holiday display, it’s important to understand how each performs. From energy usage and brightness to safety and durability, the differences can impact not only how your display looks, but how long it lasts and how much it costs to run.
How They Work:
- LEDs emit light when an electrical current passes through a semiconductor in a low-energy process that generates minimal heat.
- Incandescents emit light by heating a metal filament until it glows. This process requires a lot of energy and produces a lot of heat (about 90% of energy is lost as heat).
Energy Efficiency:
- LEDs use just 4.8 watts per strand.
- Incandescents use up to 28 watts for equivalent length.
Brightness & Coverage:
- LEDs provide a broad 180-degree glow, creating bright and even illumination.
- Incandescents emit a narrow beam, which can appear dim or uneven.
Durability & Lifespan:
- LEDs last up to 50,000 hours, with semiconductors housed in durable plastic. They are designed to withstand handling, weather, and repeated installations, backed by a three-season warranty.
- Incandescents are rated for 1,500–2,500 hours under ideal conditions, but handling often reduces that to 1–2 seasons. The fragile tungsten filament is prone to burnout and breakage.
Connectivity & Safety
- LEDs allow safe connection of up to 45 strands and run much cooler, minimizing fire risk and overheating issues.
- Incandescents generate significant heat and can cause electrical problems if more than four sets are linked, increasing the risk of blown fuses and fire hazards.
When it comes to creating holiday displays that are efficient, reliable, and built to last, LED lights clearly outperform incandescents in every category.
